The
mystical Isles of
Iona and Staffa
and the Trishnish isles are readily accessible
from
Mull.
Iona
lies off the south western tip of Mull and is
home to the restored
St Columba Abbey
and Nunnery where it is said that 48 Scottish
Kings including
Macbeth
are buried in the Chapel-like tombs.
Alternatively, play a round of
Golf
on Iona’s 120 year old and most challenging
course.
Staffa
(believed to be the eastern end of the giants
causeway) is also located off the south western
tip of Mull, is small (only 1 mile long and ¼
mile wide) but has developed a reputation and
huge fascination from many visitors. Its
volcanic rock formations “Staves”
are awe inspiring and give the island its name.
Over the centuries a magnificent 227 foot sea
cave has been formed from basalt pillars “Fingal’s
Cave”,
where
Mendelssohn
was inspired by hearing the theme of his
“Hebrides overture” in the sound of the sea.
The
Trishnish Isles
host a multitude of wildlife in their natural
habits including seals, otters and seabirds
including puffin colonies watch them take of and
land on the cliffs in front of you.
Days out to Staffa, Iona and the trishnish Isles
to view the spectacular scenery, caves and
wildlife, can all be arranged from the
Bellachroy. A visit to Mull should consist of at
least two nights to ensure sufficient time to
fully appreciate the island and surrounding
areas.
